TRAUMA AND STRESSOR-RELATED DISORDERS (HDV-284344)
Course Description: This course was designed to provide students with current informed and advanced-level understanding of the etiology, screening, assessment, treatment and challenges involved with people who have trauma and stressor-related disorders especially Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), as well as Acute Stress Disorder, Adjustment Disorder, and Reactive Attachment Disorder. Throughout, clinical and research content will be integrated to demonstrate the importance of incorporating valid information regarding each particular disorder and demonstrating the importance of accuracy in diagnosis and its implications. Although the above mentioned trauma related disorders will be addressed, a significant emphasis will be on PTSD and comorbid disorders. While containing a basic foundation regarding the nature of trauma, the course focuses on understanding trauma, symptoms of trauma and stressor-related disorders, comorbid factors, treatment, and challenges facing practitioners of trauma disorders. Prerequisites: This is an advanced level course. Before enrolling students are expected to have completed the following courses: Introduction to Psychology, Abnormal Psychology, Theories of Personality, and Counseling Theories/Techniques or an equivalent of each. A completed course on Stress Management, Health Psychology, Introduction to Behavioral Neuroscience, or related courses is strongly recommended, but is not required. Important Note: This course was completely redesigned into a 4 credit course effective September 2015 term. The former course was offered for 2 credits titled as HDV-284332 Post-Traumatic Stress. Students who have successfully completed HDV-284332 should not enroll in HDV-284344 Trauma and Stressor-Related Disorders. This online course is offered through Online Learning.
