BIOCHEMISTRY (SMT-273264)
Course Description: This advanced level course explores the chemical processes related to living organisms. This study provides a survey of what is happening inside our cells by studying the structures and functions of the four major molecules of life (proteins, lipids, carbohydrates, and nucleic acids) and their biosynthetic pathways. Topics include fundamental biological processes such as energetics, metabolism, enzyme function, and enzyme kinetics. The course will also look at how cells communicate with each other during growth or fighting illness. The biochemical basis of several diseases will be explored including cancer, diabetes, and metabolic disorders. The course is intended for advanced level science students and requires a solid foundation in chemistry. Prerequisites: Chemistry I and Chemistry II or the equivalent is required. Background in General Biology is recommended. This course fully meets the General Education requirement in Natural Sciences. This online course is offered through Online Learning. You can take this as an individual course or as part of an online degree program, with term starts in March, May, September, November and January. View current term offerings and all online courses.
