SUSTAINABLE LIVING: FOOD AND ENERGY (SMT-273464)
Course Description: Sustainability has been a major topic of public discussion and debate in recent years. At the same time, media headlines regularly grab our attention to current national health issues such as obesity. This upper level course combines both topics by exploring how our eating habits and current energy consumption impact the natural world. Students will become familiar with current trends to move communities to a more sustainable way of living. Topics will include: natural resources (focused on land and energy); why sustainability; food systems; energy and transportation choices; challenges and opportunities. Specifically, students will learn and consider the relationship between their lifestyle choices and their impact on earth. In addition, the students will design a scientific research project from beginning to end, including the creation of an annotated bibliography, proposal, data collection and analysis, presentation and a research paper. This course is appropriate for students who wish to concentrate in environmental science, environmental studies, or related field. The course may also be appropriate for students interested in furthering their knowledge on sustainability that have met the pre-requisites. Prerequisites: Foundational knowledge about environmental systems gained in a lower level environmental science course, such as Geology & the Environment, Global Climate Change or Introduction to Ecology and Sustainability Development is required.
