LGBT WORKPLACE ISSUES (BME-213714)
Course Description: LGBT issues in the workplace have become multi-faceted, complex, dynamic, and increasingly important for leaders, Human Resource professionals, employees, and anyone in a supervisory position. This course is designed to give students a rich, deep perspective on issues related Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender people. Students will study the history of the LGBT equal rights movement through a U.S. based lens. They will also study the history and current status of the movement in other countries. Students will examine state, local and national legislation related to LGBT rights, and they will acquire a framework to understand how LGBT issues are human rights issues, and how LGBT inclusion is a positive and strategic dimension of good organizational leadership and design. The course uses the workplace as its primary locus of examination, and while the course focuses on Human Resource Management as the way that LGBT equal rights become manifest, the course is designed for anyone who wants a embark upon a close examination of this subject. Students will learn about organizational heterosexism and homophobia, how it impacts the workplace, and how to create safe and inclusive environments for LGBT people. Students will acquire a framework to understand global issues related to LGBT rights. Prerequisites: Foundation knowledge in human resources management and/or organizational behavior through courses/studies or experience. NOTE: If you have already completed the 2 credit Selected Topics: LGBT Issues in the Workplace, you cannot take the 4-credit LGBT Workplace Issues course. There is substantial overlap between these two courses and students cannot include both in their degree plans. The 2 credit course is no longer offered. This online course is offered through Online Learning.
