PHYSICS II (SMT-271084)
Course Description: Physics II is the second course of the two-term sequence in general physics. This course serves as an introduction to the basic principles of physics, primarily in the domain of electromagnetism, the study of electrical and magnetic systems and phenomena. Additional topics in thermal physics and quantum physics will be explored. The course presents physics concepts using an algebra-based framework. Themes to be explored will include: heat and temperature; phases and phase changes; laws of thermodynamics; electric charges, forces, and fields; electric potential; electric current and direct-current circuits; magnetism; electromagnetic waves; geometric optics; physical optics; quantum mechanics; atomic and nuclear physics. This course includes a laboratory component. Comfort with algebra and trigonometry. Precalculus is preferred. Background knowledge of kinematics, dynamics, energy, and waves/harmonic motion (such as found in a Physics I course. This course fully meets the General Education requirement in Natural Sciences. NOTE: This course has a laboratory component which requires a lab kit that must be purchased from ESC's bookstore (http://www.esc.edu/bookstore/). Please order in time to allow for shipping before the start of the term. This online course is offered through Online Learning. You can take this as an individual course or as part of an online degree program, with term starts in March, May, September, November and January. View current term offerings and all online courses.
