PROPOSAL WRITING (3CR) (CUL-233053)

Online Learning Home > Online Learning Catalog > Communications Humanities and Cultural Studies >

Course Description:

In this three credit, fifteen-week course, students will develop analytical, research, and writing skills at the upper level. Proposal Writing offers a way of honing these skills in a concrete, real-world context. Students will read and analyze sample proposals and build on basic communication theory to learn what constitutes appropriate proposal content and format. Students will be expected to write a short academic proposal and two longer, formal, work- or community-related proposals for situations of their choice. Students will also investigate proposals as a form of logical argument, learning about basic elements of argument, different argument strategies, and common errors in logical argument. Students will learn how to find, use, and evaluate the quality of evidence to logically support their proposal ideas. They will also learn about visual rhetoric and do a short oral/visual proposal presentation with heightened attention to visual representation to support evidence. Students will share and discuss their writing throughout the course as part of learning how to analyze a proposal’s effectiveness. Students taking this course should have advanced-level skills.

This course was previously offered as a two credit, 8 week course. Those who completed Proposal Writing 233052 should not take 233053.

Note: Students taking the three credit version cannot take the two credit version.

This course fully meets the General Education requirement in Basic Communication.
