Course Description:


Learn to use computers effectively for business and personal applications. This course includes general concepts of how the personal computer operates, the vocabulary and uses of popular application software, and hands-on learning of word processing, spreadsheet, database, and communications software. (Participants may choose alternate applications, such as graphics or presentation software, with permission of the instructor.) Gain competence in learning how to learn new software packages -- a critical skill for future employment in this world of changing software.

Students need word processing, spreadsheet, database, and communications software packages, some of which are available from the bookstore. Course tutor will be familiar with the most commonly used software packages. Students who have access to other software may use these programs to complete their assignments; however, course tutors may not be familiar with exact procedures for other programs.

Note: Requires an IBM compatible computer, a printer, and a modem. Students must already own or purchase the necessary software for use in the course.

Basic familiarity with the computer printer and disk handling is helpful, but no previous study of computers is assumed.

Note: January Term 2004 is the last term this course will be offered in print version. In future terms, it will be offered only online (271454).
