Dr. Catherine Fisher Collins is a woman of many facets: a writer, teacher, nurse practitioner, college dean, television host, former Buffalo school board member and world traveler. She began her writing career to fill a gap in the literature on African Americans, especially women. Her doctorate and master's degrees are from the State University of New York at Buffalo. Dr. Collins’ undergraduate work was completed at Trocaire College and State University College at Buffalo.
Dr. Collins is a respected author of several published books, including, "Sources of Stress and Relief for African American Women," (2003); "The Imprisonment of African American Women: Causes, Conditions and Future Implications," (1997, winner of the 1997 Outstanding Academic and Scholarly Award), and "African American Women’s Health and Social Issues," (1996) and "African American Women’s Health and Social Issues," 2nd edition (2006 ). Other publications include, "The Kinship Caregivers Handbook," (2004) and "Parent Child Rearing Practices," (1993). Her new publication released in 2010 is "The Imprisonment of African American Women." This book notes that one out of every 18 African American women born in the United States can expect to go to jail some point during her lifetime.
Her books, lectures, teaching on health issues and women prisoners, a documentary on a South African women’s prison, and community services, have earned her numerous awards. She also is a former member of New York State’s Commission of Corrections Medical Review Board. In 2009, she was inducted into the Western New York Women’s Hall of Fame. Dr. Collins is currently associate professor at State University of New York Empire State College.
