Description: Review Asian, European, African, and American civilizations from c. 1600 to the present. Examine the development and global impact of growing central authority, the birth of the nation-state, the industrial revolution, and the rise of capitalism. Discover how political absolutism in Europe gave way to the rise of a democratic ideology forged by the social contract theories of the Enlightenment, tested in the English, American, and French Revolutions. The impact of colonialism and its mixed consequences to Africa, Asia, and the Americas is examined. Emphasis is also given to developments in the newly industrializing, post-colonial countries, the onset and passing of the Cold War, and other challenges of the contemporary world. By itself, this course meets the general education requirement in Other World Civilizations. The two course cycle, World History 1 and World History 2, satisfies two general education requirements: Western Civilization and Other World Civilizations.

NOTE: Students should NOT take both World History 2 and Modern European Civilization Since 1815.

Note: March Term 2004 is the last term this course will be offered in print version. In future terms, it will be offered only online (242114).
