Description:
Study in Community and Human Services explores the relationship of human being's needs and values to community living in a societal context. By integrating the knowledge, skills, attitudes and values of the helping professional, the practicum prepares students for work in the helping professions and roles in community service. The practicum experience is an opportunity for the CHS student to apply concepts and skills learned in their education to an actual setting in Community and Human Services. It is where the application of knowledge and theory meets the responsibilities of the professional in the field. The practicum will provide students with the opportunity to apply the theories and techniques they have learned in their course of studies at Empire State College, and to understand the circumstances that may limit the application of those techniques. It is also an opportunity to understand one's self in the context of a helping role within an agency that seeks to assist others. The student will have the opportunity to work within the organization while observing the agency's responsibilities, administration and external relationships with clients, stakeholders and providers.
Note: September Term 2003 is the last term this course will be offered in print version. In future terms, it will be offered only online (254064).

Study in Community and Human Services explores the relationship of human being’s needs and values to community living in a societal context.
It is also an opportunity to understand one’s self in the context of a helping role within an agency that seeks to assist others. The student will have the opportunity to work within the organization while observing the agency’s responsibilities, administration and external relationships with clients, stakeholders and providers.
The practicum agency and the actual experience are located and secured by the student, not the course tutor or the College. The following are guidelines for the selection of a Practicum experience will be helpful:
Placement Agency:
Practicum agencies can be any human services organization which is not currently the student’s employer. This can include social service agencies, schools, hospitals, non-profit organizations sponsored by specific groups for the purpose of assisting those in need, managed care and for-profit organizations which deal with human service issues, or grass-roots community groups seeking to effect change or assist others.
Practicum with one's current employer are
rare
, since the opportunities provided by another agency often broaden the scope as well as the depth of student knowledge. To be approved at an agency where the student currently works, practicum with one's current employer must:
Involve
substantially different
duties than those presently performed
Require 6-8 hrs of work weekly beyond the usual and customary requirements of one's job
Must be supervised by someone
other
than one's direct supervisor.
Requests must be made through the student's mentor who will contact the Community and Human Services Area Coordinators for review of the request with the mentor and Practicum tutor.
Since the primary purpose of the Practicum is to gain experience in the Community and Human Services field, a minimum of 6-8 hours per week in the agency for 14 of the 15 weeks of the course is strongly encouraged. The specifics of a student’s duties at the agency will be negotiated between the student, the supervisor and the tutor.
Supervisor:
The student’s supervisor should be a human service professional with a graduate degree in the field (MSW, M.Ed. MSN, Ph.D, Psy.D., Ed.D etc.)
The supervisor should be willing to provide oversight for the student’s work and meet with the student regularly to provide supervision and assistance in completing the experience.
Supervisors should also be willing to correspond with the tutor in writing and on the phone/email to complete the required forms for the student’s placement including a description of the student’s specific duties, identification of the expected outcomes and a final written evaluation at the conclusion of the Practicum.
Students:
Will be expected to fulfill the negotiated hours at their agency during the Practicum with an eye towards meeting agreed-upon student outcomes for the experience.
All course requirements will be completed as outlined in the Course Guide, including a written journal of their Practicum experience.
The specifics of information required from the student, agency and supervisor will be guided by the tutor with the forms available in the Practicum text.
