Description: This course explores the social, political, cultural and economic origins and impacts of the struggles of men and women to have a greater say in the rules that govern their lives that occurred in nations and areas that bordered the Atlantic Ocean from 1688-1819. The struggles to be explored include political revolutions, slave rebellions, and workers’ organization.
The course will foster an exploration of broader historical questions, including the kind of social framework that creates an environment for social change, and the idea of nationalism and its relationship to individual liberty.

Prerequisites: Students should have an introductory level of knowledge of the history of the era. Global History from the 15th Century or US History to 1865 is recommended, but not required. Students must have the ability to research and reason at the upper level.
