Description: Examine Latin America's social history and United States-Latin American relations during the "modern" period of Latin American history (1821 to the present). Explore the thicket of human diversity and political controversy that stamps all of Latin American and United States history. Examine the broad scope of modern Latin American history, culture, ethnicity, economic development, society, politics, migration patterns, and foreign relations in the Caribbean, Central America, Mexico, and South America. Develop a knowledge of Latin American diversity from the early 1800s to the present, with emphasis on its importance to the United States. This course meets the general education requirement in Other World Civilizations.
