Description: Study the structuring of social inquiry and the modes of observation: experiments, survey research, field research, unobtrusive research and evaluation research. Examine the logic of analysis and the ethical questions about social research. The orientation is more sociological than psychological but the content is broadly applicable to the social sciences. Professionals in the fields of human services, public affairs, education, law and business who have occasion to read scientific reports on social research will find this course helps them to understand the findings. Students with research interests in the social sciences, including graduate school, will find this course invaluable.

Prerequisite: at least three courses in such fields as sociology, political science, anthropology, or psychology. Prior knowledge of statistics is not required.

This course fully meets the General Education requirement in Social Sciences.
