Description: Examine cross-cultural differences in competitive and cooperative behavior, including consideration of theoretical explanations of the origins of human cooperation and competitiveness. Questions explored include: Are either competition or cooperation "given" in human nature? What circumstances give rise to these opposing forces in cultures everywhere? How does the theme of competitive versus cooperative behavior play itself out in the modern world? What does an understanding of this process enable one to say about one's own culture?

Prerequisite: previous study in the social sciences; An Introduction to Culture is strongly recommended.

This course fully meets the General Education requirement in Social Sciences.
