Description: This is a qualitative and descriptive study that will introduce and provide a working knowledge of the engineering materials that are important in industry - metals, ceramics, plastics, and composites, including those important to the steel and telecommunications industries. The primary focus will be on understanding the relationships between structure and properties, and between properties and functional use, and on examining how materials perform in work environments. Explanations and discussion will always reflect the principles of chemistry and physics that underlie the properties and behavior of materials. In addition to a general survey of materials, students will have an opportunity to explore an area of interest by selecting one or two materials-related topics for in-depth study.
