Description: This study will familiarize the student with the procedures that the civil and criminal law uses to address the treatment of individuals with mental disabilities, including guardianship for those determined unable to manage their property or their welfare, those deemed a danger to themselves or others, those incompetent to stand trial and those not responsible for criminal behavior. The increasing role of the police and correctional institutions in dealing with these individuals will be examined, including the right of mentally-disabled persons to treatment and their right to refuse treatment. Assignments include quizzes, written papers, research essays, a course project, and discussion participation.
