Description: The group of people described as “Hispanic/ Latino” is one of the fastest growing minorities in the US and is becoming more and more important politically and economically. Students will have an opportunity to discuss and study several important issues related major Latino ethnic groups in the United States. The course will examine problems Latinos have faced and continue to face in relation to immigration, education, discrimination, and participation in the political arena. Students will explore a variety of cultures defined as Hispanic in the contexts of their unique histories in the US and will use a variety of approaches (historical, sociological, political), and sources (literature, media, popular culture) to understand each culture.

Recommended: Prior study in history, sociology, anthropology or politics.

This course fully meets the General Education requirement in Social Sciences.
