Description: This course is intended for human service practitioners who will be working with clients and their families. It examines strategies and techniques of major family theories and therapeutic models to help students understand how the family functions as a system and how professionals interact with family members to discern patterns of communication. Students will learn assessment tools such as the genogram and, through written assignments, will have an opportunity to explore issues of particular interest to them.

Prerequisite: Introduction to Human Services or equivalent. A basic course in interviewing or counseling skills is recommended.
