Survey the organization, management, and growing influence of public bureaucracies at the federal, state and local levels of government. Evaluate initiatives designed to make public organizations more accountable, rational, cost-effective, and innovative. Particular attention is given to case studies which illustrate theories and concepts from the perspective of the practicing administrator. The course is organized around four themes: public administration theory and its relationship to political and policy sciences; the relationship among social values, ethics, politics and public administration; the environment of public administration; and the operation and performance of public bureaucracies.
This course should be of particular interest to students engaged in or preparing for public service careers and those interested in health, social and community service, public safety, criminal justice administration, health service administration and not-for-profit administration.
Recommended: There are no specific prerequisites, but students are advised to have taken The American Political System: An Introduction to American Government or its equivalent before enrolling.
