Course Description:


Understand the relationships among the fire service, politics, and law. Study the legal basis of the police power of government as it relates to public safety, legal limitations and responsibility, and liability of fire service organizations and personnel. Integrate an awareness and knowledge of political and legal concepts with fire service management practice, including a review of the judicial system. Includes civil and criminal law, progenitor laws, individual and department liability, personnel procedures and requirements, product liability, political actions and member rights, fire prevention and building codes, legal procedures and legislation related to topics such as worker's compensation and landlord responsibilities.

Prerequisite: Students need sufficient fire training and experience to apply political and legal concepts to the fire service.

Recommended: College Writing, The American Political System, Communications for Professionals, Legal Environment of Business 1, Economics/Macro, or equivalents.
