Study the contemporary crises facing Africa and conflict among its peoples as a result of a collision of cultures. Includes discussion of traditional African civilizations, the environment, religious belief systems in modern Africa, the impact of the slave trade and European colonialism, and the contributions of African women, and analysis of contemporary issues facing Africa. This course meets the general education requirement in Other World Civilizations.
Activities include reading African literature and, while following contemporary news reports from Africa, reading historical, economic, anthropological, sociological, and political studies conducted by both Africans and non-African specialists. Assignments include essays synthesizing studies of the human ecology and colonial legacy of Africa, post-colonial African societies, and Africa as part of a global system.
Recommended: Previous study in World History 1, World History 2, or equivalent.
