Course Description:

Study contemporary Brazil, once seen as infinite in mineral resources, infinite in mighty rivers, infinite in tropical rain forests, and infinite in promise. Explore Brazil's history and geography to gain an appreciation for the interaction of the people with the land and how colonial institutions shaped present-day Brazil. Study Brazil's efforts to join the ranks of industrialized nations as well as the plight of Indians and urban poor who have not benefited from Brazil's economic development. The geographic, ethnic, and racial diversity of the country are stressed through studies of economic development, race relations, migration and community change, and oral histories of Brazilian women. This course meets the general education requirement in Other World Civilizations.

Recommended: Previous study in World History 1, World History 2, Latin America, or equivalent.

Note: January Term 2004 is the last term this course will be offered in print version. In future terms, it will be offered only online (243364).
