This course explores the role gender plays in the presentation, diagnosis, treatment and management of illness, as well as disease prevention and health promotion. It conceptually integrates health psychology, women and men’s studies and the emerging field of gender medicine. Emphasis will be on developing a differential understanding of feminine and masculine forms of help-seeking and behavior change. Topics will range from gender-specific health concerns to health promotion models, leading to gender competent nursing practice. This course satisfies the college’s liberal arts and sciences requirements.
