Description: Examine the experiences in the United States of peoples of African origin, from slavery to contemporary times, including the slave trade, the experience of slaves, and the cultural, political, economic, and geographical implications of slavery. Analyze the African American experience in terms of racial conflict, demography, labor and class formation, the origins of the Civil Rights Movement, education, regional questions, and contemporary issues. This course meets the general education requirement in Amercian History only for students scoring above 84 on the New York State Regents exam in United States History and Government.
