Description: Study the major Spanish-speaking ethnic groups in the United States in relation to migration, intercultural conflict, patterns of settlement, forces of assimilation and pluralism, social class, and participation in the United States political arena. Gain perspectives from history, literature, sociology, and political economy. Opportunity will be provided to study in depth, for example, a specific Hispanic minority of choice, the changing role of women, or the growing potential of Hispanics as consumers and entrepreneurs. Those with access to Hispanic or Latino communities are encouraged to use such available resources as plays, movies, newspapers, interviews, community organizations. This course meets the general education requirement in Social Science.
