Description: Become familiar with the kinds of independent learning involved in distance study. Develop skills of learning and communication that are valuable in all learning processes.

Designed for participants in the USWA-ICD Distance Learning Program, this course seeks to develop learning strategies, independent study skills, and techniques that meet steelworkers' individual needs. The course enables the student to evaluate and apply those methods by which he or she learns best, and to identify a variety of circumstances and locations in which effective learning can take place. Written assignments will encourage students to identify, analyze, and use central concepts in their reading and in their writing, and further develop critical abilities in thinking, reading, writing, and speaking. Above all, the course will enable students to gain those abilities necessary to the independent learning processes that take place outside of a classroom environment.
