Description: Learn to program in BASIC, a common high-level language for personal computers. Follow a systematic and disciplined approach to problem-solving and to structured programming. Examples and problems from a variety of application areas are included in readings to encourage problem-solving logic and skills. Includes fundamental statements and commands; expressions and functions; interactive I/O; decision structures, branching, and control loops; string variables and character manipulation; subroutines; and an introduction to arrays and to files.

Required: Access to a computer which supports the BASIC language, preferably either QuickBASIC or QBASIC. Expect to spend several hours each week on the computer and to send the tutor copies of programs and program executions. Students need access to the User's and Reference Manuals for the particular computer they are using.

Recommended: Basic understanding of computers and some hands-on experience with microcomputers, basic math and algebra skills.
