Description: Learn about film, drama, music, literature, painting, sculpture, and architecture through a study of Western arts and how they function as expressions of human values. Each of the arts is considered from historical, creative, expressive, and critical perspectives. Understand the historical influences of political, cultural, and scientific values upon art. Discover the basic elements and tools an artist uses to create a work of art. Learn different ways of "seeing" and interpreting a work of art, and develop the processes of inquiry, perception, criticism, and evaluation. This course meets the general education requirement in Humanities or The Arts.

Required: This course includes a video component. Videos are available by rental from the Empire State College Bookstore.

Note: For this course you will also need Beethoven Symphony No. 3 in E Flat "Eroica" Compact Disk (Sony #46328). The CD-ROM can be purchased at Amazon.com or other music outlets.
