Description: Survey the general development of India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan and the Maldives. Discover the role history plays in current social structure and politics, the various paths to nationhood and modernization, and the contemporary challenges facing these countries. Assignments address both an historical review of events and analyses of current South Asian issues, focusing on similarities and differences in the civilizations in this portion of the world, the influence of the West in their later development, and the current problems facing them as a major portion of the world's populations.

Prerequisites: Students should have taken at least two courses in history, sociology, anthropology or political science, and be prepared for upper-level work.
