Description: Study the combustion process, with an emphasis on fire chemistry, oxidizers, reducing agents, temperature criteria, and molecular chain reactions. Historical and current theories of combustion are studied. Activities address heat transfer, fuel configuration and geometry, thermal columns, ventilation, theoretical considerations of flashover, research concerning fire spread, computer models, and modeling as a means to understand fire phenomena.

Prerequisite: Students should have some academic or practical background in chemistry, physics, algebra, and hazardous materials, advanced fire training and experience.

Recommended: Previous study in Fire Protection Structures and Systems Design, College Writing, or equivalent.
