Description: World Art to 1400 covers artworks in historical context while recognizing that there is no single history of all art. We will study artworks to understand what the artist made, to think about why and how it was made, to consider its historical context and to understand any cross-cultural aspects that may be reflected in the work. You will develop your ability to look at artworks with an understanding of their potential meanings as well as your ability to research works of interest to you. We will study the ancient world; the medieval period including Christian, Jewish and Islamic artworks; and the art of Asia, the Americas and Africa. There is no prerequisite for this course.

This course fully meets the General Education requirement in Other World Civilizations and Western Civilization.
