Description: Study the eighteenth century Enlightenment that changed the perception of the universe, rocked the thrones of Europe, shook the roots of religious heterodoxy, and gave new dimensions to philosophy, literature, and the arts. Read classic studies by Enlightenment scholars and analyze the influences of the Enlightenment upon the development of the United States polity and the role of women in Europe and beyond. Develop a set of personal conclusions and assess the contemporary meaning of the Enlightenment. This course meets the general education requirement in Humanities and Western Civilization.
