Description: Explore race, class, and gender, with an emphasis on conceptual tools developed since the 1970s in both empirical studies and critical thought about these categories. The student will develop analytic methods for understanding distinctions and controversies, e.g., the difference between sex and gender; the difference between race and ethnicity; arguments for and against affirmative action; and the ways in which race, gender, and class overlap.

There are no prerequisites for this course, although students should have had the equivalent of one year of college.
