Description: Examine cross-cultural differences in competitive and cooperative behavior, including consideration of theoretical explanations of the origins of human cooperation and competitiveness. Questions explored include: Are either competition or cooperation "given" in human nature? What circumstances give rise to these opposing forces in cultures everywhere? How does the theme of competitive versus cooperative behavior play itself out in the modern world? What does an understanding of this process enable one to say about one's own culture? This course meets the general education requirement in Social Science.

Prerequisites: Previous study in the social sciences; Faces of Culture is strongly recommended.

New option: This course will be supplemented with a home page featuring Web resources. E-mail communication with your instructor will be strongly encouraged.
