Description: Investigate the health services sector using the tools of microeconomic analysis. Analyze health care markets and market reform. Explore the rapidly evolving institutional environment including the role of government programs, payment systems, and the rise of HMOs and other managed care organizations. Study the impact of insurance, both private and public, on demand, supply, and market performance. Trade-offs involved in achieving the goals of quality care, access, and reasonable cost are highlighted. Students complete additional readings and written assignments in this six credit version of the course.

Students enrolling in this course should have a basic knowledge of health service provider and payor organizations and their fiscal operations.
