Description: In this eight-week course, students will become familiar with the history, philosophy and purposes of the criminal law as well as the elements of crimes in general and of specific crimes against the person, property, public order and public morals. Students will be required to analyze specific factual situations and apply those elements to determine whether specific crimes have been committed; the elements necessary to prove criminal defenses and the policies underlying them will also be examined and analyzed.

Prerequisite skills and knowledge: The student should be familiar with reading, analyzing and "briefing" legal cases, as might be learned in such introductory law courses as Introduction to Law and the Legal System or Legal Environment of Business. Familiarity with internet research will be expected.
