Description: What is a disaster? How do social structures, groups and institutions react to the loss of social function as a result of natural, technological, or sociopolitical events? This upper level course explores social effects of disaster from both a macro and a micro level of analysis, using social theories of organizational behavior, political sociology, community development, religion, urban planning, and rural sociology that inform the field of disaster research.

Prerequisites: Upper-level standing with advanced-level critical thinking, reading, research and writing skills. A previous study (or equivalent knowledge) in social theory or structure is desirable, but not mandatory.

Important Notes: This course fully meets the General Education requirement in Social Sciences for students who took this course during the period from Fall 2011 through November 2015. Effective January 2016, this course no longer meets the General Education requirement in Social Sciences.

Effective for the September 2016 term, this course replaces Psycho-Social Impacts of Mass Disasters (CHS-264864).
