Description: In this eight-week course, students will become familiar with the constitutional issues and court rulings related to the arrest, search and seizure, detention, trial and incarceration of criminal defendants. The rights of prisoners and constitutional responsibilities of correctional institutions will also be studied and analyzed. The student will analyze and apply the law to hypothetical fact patterns and prepare written responses. The student will write short response papers, using internet resources to find statutory and case law, then analyze and summarize the research.

Prerequisite skills and knowledge: The student should be familiar with reading, analyzing and “briefing” legal cases, as might be learned in such introductory law courses as Introduction to Law and the Legal System or Legal Environment of Business.
