Course Description:
This studio inspired course addresses the fundamental aspects of three dimensional design using an online workshop approach while looking at the history, theory and practice of sculpture. Students will engage in the creation of three dimensional work, applying basic concepts used in additive and subtractive sculpture to their visual work as a means of developing a strong three dimensional vocabulary. Explored during the term will be such concepts as relief sculpture, free standing sculpture, and environmental sculpture. Supporting the studio portion of this study students are expected to participate in all readings, online discussions, and group critiques as ways of informing their visual work while referencing both three dimensional aesthetics and art history discussed throughout the term.
This course expands our knowledge of aesthetic composition to include three dimensional problem solving which is important for those students pursuing a degree in the visual arts. Students who are focusing on specific populations such as young children, the elderly and at risk youths and wish to incorporate creative problem solving skills and three dimensional projects in their work may find this course helpful.
Note: Students need to purchase their own set of art media/materials. Students need to digitally document sculptural work (using a digital camera or other digital tools) and post their work online for critiquing and evaluation.
This course fully meets the General Education requirement in The Arts.
