Course Description:
Historical geology serves as an introduction to the development and history of Earth. On the grand scale, Earth is a constantly changing planet. Emphasis will be placed on: understanding the environments of the changing earth; evolutionary processes; the fossil record; application of fundamental principles of sequence stratigraphy to the reconstruction of ancient tectonic relationships; and, the procedures used in scientific analysis. Laboratory exercises provide support and reinforce the core concepts of the course.
Historical Geology aligns with the Science, Mathematics and Technology area of study guidelines and the Environmental Science concentration guidelines, specifically the physical environmental science core.
Prerequisites: It is not necessary to take anything before Historical Geology, but if you are going to take one of these courses, the preferred sequence is to take introduction to Geology and/or Physical Geology before Historical Geology.
This course fully meets the General Education requirement in Natural Sciences.
