Description: This introductory level course provides the student with knowledge of the principles and application of human genomics, which addresses all genes and their interrelationships in order to identify their combined influence on the growth and development of the human organism. The course introduces the basics of molecular genetics and the principles of heredity and goes on to identify chromosomal disorders and gene mutations associated with human diseases. Students will explore the role of health professionals in genomics, including obtaining health histories, constructing pedigrees, and providing genetic counseling. Other topics include population genetics, newborn screening, perinatal genetics, pharmacogenomics, and ethical concerns.

This course fully meets the General Education requirement in Natural Sciences.
