Description: This study is designed to provide students with an introductory understanding of Public Speaking - the delivery of information to an audience. Learn how Public Speaking differs from other forms of communication and how to differentiate skills needed for online vs. live delivery. Four main aspects will be addressed in this course: 1) Speech/presentation development – e.g., identifying audience characteristics, determining appropriate content and focus, organizing information, 2) types of presentations, e.g., informative, formal, informal, large vs. small group, digital vs. site-based, 3) presentation techniques, e.g., stance, delivery, using visual aids, addressing questions, and 4) Supportive skills, e.g., listening and analyzing the speeches of others, ethical presentation of information, addressing diverse audiences. Students will prepare and deliver four speeches and one final paper: 1) introductory speech, 2) informative speech or demonstration presentation (live and recorded), 3) ceremonial speech, 4) persuasive speech or presentation, and 5) Paper on digital presentation/virtual speaking. Students are required to deliver one live speech and to assemble an audience and record the live speech (this may be done via Skype). Students are encouraged to develop presentations for real work or community situations, as much as possible.
