Course Description:
This course will help students deepen their managerial skills and leadership abilities by studying and applying the Competing Values Framework to management situations and decisions that arise in the course of catastrophic events. Students will learn how to balance the needs for flexibility vs. control and the internal vs. external orientation to enhance the effectiveness of their organization in responding to events. Topics include historical perspectives of management in disasters, management of public resources, information systems, and command systems, understanding managerial styles and leadership strategies, and the elements of decision-making in extreme situations.

Prerequisites: Principles of Management, or equivalent experience in some aspect of Emergency Management.

NOTE: This course was previously offered as Organization and Management of Disaster Response. Students who have taken 264304, should not enroll in Leadership and Management in Disaster Response.
