Course Description:
This advanced level study of Counseling Theories is designed to build on the student’s knowledge of psychology and provide an overview of the various schools of thought, mainstream theories, and approaches to counseling, such as psychoanalytic, existential, humanistic, person-centered, gestalt, reality, behavior, cognitive/behavior, feminist, and family systems. This course is a practical introduction to the fundamentals of counseling, such as how different theories propose to help people change, the characteristics of the role of the counselor, and the development of the client-counselor relationship. This study also emphasizes the importance of in-depth awareness about the counselor’s personal attitudes, values, and ethics, as well as the importance of being knowledgeable about cultural differences and issues.
Prerequisite: Introduction to Psychology. Completion of Introduction to Human Services or related courses and is recommended but not required.
