Course Description:
In this upper level mathematics course students will experience topics through numerical calculations both by hand and utilizing Maple, reading and writing of proofs, and discussion. Explore the properties of integers in this introduction to number theory and its applications, including topics in the history of number representation systems, divisibility, prime numbers, linear Diophantine equations, Fermat’s last theorem, cryptology, and public key encryption.

The primary audience for this course is students who wish to concentrate in either mathematics or applied mathematics. Students interested in teaching mathematics will find rich material that can be tailored to share with their future students in grades K-12.

Prior to enrolling in this course, students should be fluent in the foundations of mathematics and comfortable with mathematical proof (both reading and writing of proofs). Such knowledge may be obtained from courses such as Logic & Proof, Discrete Mathematics, or Linear Algebra, for example.
