Description: The history of the First Peoples of North America from first contact with Europeans to the present includes dislocation, cultural disruption and assimilation, fragmented communities, as well as transformation, resilience, and continuity. Using a mix of primary documents and contemporary videos and writings, we will hear the voices of North America's indigenous people. We’ll learn about histories, environments, cultures, and activities of American Indian nations and communities, on and off the reservations, in the past and today. The course also examines the history of relationships between First Nations and the United States government and political system, as well as American Indian activism in global concerns. We will conclude with a look at Pan Indianness and the questions and possibilities it opens for the global future.

Prerequisites: prior learning in American history and/or government such as learning demonstrated by fulfillment of SUNY General Education Requirement in American History.

This course fully meets the General Education requirement in Other World Civilizations.
