Description: This upper-level course will begin with an overview of the molecular structure of the major biomolecules that comprise cells, eukaryotic sub-cellular structures, organelles and their functions. Key concepts such as protein and lipid synthesis, transport, and degradation, vesicular trafficking, endocytosis and exocytosis will be explored. Cell signaling mechanisms, molecular structure and behaviors of the cytoskeleton, and the basic events of the cell cycle and the importance of programmed cell death (apoptosis) will be studied in detail. Problem-solving, virtual laboratories and the use of cutting-edge online resources will be utilized to develop an understanding of the relevance of cell biology to current human medical practices.

Prerequisites: Human Biology or General Biology or professor’s permission.
