Description: Photographic images can have a powerful and memorable impact. Discover how structure, form, composition and special effects contribute to a final work while compiling your own portfolio of photographs. Learn the technical aspects of the camera and the communicative and artistic potential of the medium. Photographs will be shared with the class for critique to further develop technique and personal style. Additional topics covered include the history of photography, various genres such as portraiture and photojournalism, and photography as art. We will also study the work of accomplished professional photographers through virtual field trips and explore the consistent elements present in successfully executed photographs.

Note: students need access to a camera (a digital SLR is preferable, but any camera is acceptable), and digital capability to submit photographs as low-resolution JPEG images.

This course fully meets the General Education requirement in The Arts.
