Description: In this advanced course students will explore the concepts and practices of Public History. Students will explore and critique diverse media,including film and web sites, oral history collections and photographs. They will also take self guided tours to physical and virtual public history sites. Students will have the opportunity to conduct hands on research projects ranging from video documentation to traditional research papers. Students interested in history, culture, journalism,arts management,art history, museum studies, historical studies, and public policy will benefit from this course. In addition, this course will also appeal to those students interested in non-academic careers. Students in Social Theory, Structure and Change will also benefit from this course because of its focus on collective memory and identity. The course will also appeal to Communications and Media Studies students as it will also cover traditional and non-traditional media as well as physical venues that may be used to communicate a common story to a diverse audience.

Prerequisites: Experience in research projects suggested.

Optional: Students interested in doing video and or audio documentation should have access to visual and or audio equipment.

This course fully meets the General Education requirement in Humanities.
