SOFTWARE AND WORKBOOKS
Let’s look more closely at what software and workbooks you will need since there are some choices here. First, you need to understand that it is possible to use one of several different software programs to carry out the work for this course. If you already have the software, you will only need to order the workbook that goes with that software. If you don’t have the software, you will need to purchase software you need, and then order the workbooks that go with the software. Empire State College does not supply software. These programs are widely available through computer and office supply stores as well as mail order and online companies (such as micromaster.com).

What options do you have in terms of software? First, you need to understand that you may have an integrated software package that includes all three software programs you will need -- word processing (WP), spreadsheet (SS), and database (DB). Or you may have software that is specific to one application, for example a word processing program. Some new computers come bundled with word processing and spreadsheet software, but not database software. Make sure you have all three. If you have only the first two, you can often purchase an upgrade to your package to add the database software more cheaply than it would cost to buy the whole integrated package. Another thing to keep in mind is that there are different versions of the same software. You want to be sure to get the workbook that goes with the software you plan to use. If there is no workbook for the version of software that you have, order the next closest version.

What if you aren't sure what software is loaded on your computer? You can look up what files are on your machine. On Windows 95 and Windows 98, there's a "Find" option. You will find this on the Start Menu. On Windows 3.1, you need to go to the Main folder and open the File Manager. Under the File Menu, you'll find a "Search" option. Type in the individual names of the programs listed in the options so that you can determine if you have any of them.

(NOTE: It may be possible to carry out the assignments for this class with other software, but that is your responsibility. If you have a User Manual for the software, you can use it together with the exercises in the Course Guide for the assignments. We strongly recommend that you use one of the integrated packages that we have workbooks for.)

Study the information below. Since you have several options, it can be a bit confusing at first. But if you work your way through the information below, you should be able to determine what materials you need to order for the Microcomputer Applications class. Note the codes in parentheses; these are supplied to make it as easy as possible to determine which workbooks you will need. If you still have questions, contact Bernice Kennedy at the Center for Distance Learning (518 587-2100 ext. 307), to discuss your situation prior to ordering materials.
